Texas freshman catcher/first baseman Michael Cantu has been named Big 12 co-newcomer of the week for his role in the Longhorns winning five games in six days.
Cantu started three games at catcher and two at first base, while hitting .375 (6-for-16) with seven RBI, six runs, and a pair of doubles. He also drew six walks.
Cantu had the first two multi-hit games of his career in the first two games of the week, going 2-for-3 vs. UT-San Antonio and 3-for-3 in the series opener vs. Minnesota. In that game against the Gophers, Cantu recorded five RBI and two walks.
Meanwhile, Texas (7-2) has moved up one spot to No. 9 in the Baseball America poll. The Horns host UT Pan American on Tuesday.
Cantu shared the honor with Oklahoma State outfielder Jon Littell, who hit .429 (6-for-14) in four games with two doubles and five RBI.
