Texas freshman RHP Connor Mayes has been named the Big 12’s newcomer of the week.
Mayes, of Lake Travis High, relieved starter Josh Sawyer in Saturday’s loss to West Virginia and struck out 10 batters in 6 2/3 innings. At one point, Mayes retired 15 straight batters before surrendering a walk in the ninth inning. Texas lost the game, 4-3, when closer Ty Culbreth walked in the winning run in the top of the 10th. The Longhorns won the other two games against the Mountaineers and moved up one spot, to No. 22, in Baseball America’s poll.
In a scheduling note, Texas’ game against UT Arlington on Tuesday has been moved up one hour to 6 p.m. over weather concerns. The game will be played at Globe Life Park, home of the Texas Rangers.
