Texas LHP Josh Sawyer has lost his spot in the weekend rotation, marking the first significant shake-up to a pitching staff performing at below hopes.
Longhorns coach Augie Garrido announced the demotion Wednesday. He had not decided on Sawyer’s replacement, leaving the door open for either Kacy Clemens or Connor Mayes to throw this weekend against visiting Kansas State.
Sawyer, the Longhorns’ only lefty starter, got shelled for five earned runs in two innings against West Virginia on Saturday. It marked the third time in five starts that Sawyer didn’t make it out of the fourth inning.
Garrido also said he has not identified a closer. On Tuesday, Ty Culbreth finished off a disastrous showing by the bullpen and took the loss in a 10-inning defeat at UT Arlington. Culbreth served up a lead-off triple before throwing a wild pitch to score the winning run.
