Texas has chosen sophomore Kacy Clemens over freshman Connor Mayes for its vacancy on the weekend pitching rotation.
Clemens, who replaces the struggling Josh Sawyer, will start Sunday at home in the finale of a three-games series against Kansas State. Parker French (Friday) and Chad Hollingsworth (Saturday) will start games one and two.
Clemens, who will make his fifth start, has a 1-1 record with a 5.40 ERA. He has been effective since getting roughed up at Rice on the season’s opening weekend. He worked four innings in Tuesday’s loss at UT Arlington and surrendered one run on five hits.
The selection of Clemens is a mild upset, as Mayes was super impressive in his last appearance, striking out 10 batters in 6 2/3 innings of relief in Saturday’s loss to West Virginia. On the year, he’s allowed two earned runs in 18 innings for a 1.00 ERA. Mayes, of Lake Travis High, will either remain in the bullpen or be installed as the team’s mid-week starter.
