Texas junior outfielder Lindsey Stephens and freshman pitcher Erica Wright earned Big 12 weekly softball honors following the Longhorns’ series sweep of No. 22 Kansas over the weekend, giving Texas a sweep of the weekly awards.
Stephens was the Big 12 Player of the Week and reached safely in all five of Texas’ games last week and recorded a hit in four of five games while posting a .474 batting average with eight RBIs and a .947 slugging percentage. The Beaumont native went 9-for-19 at the plate over the stretch with eight RBIs and two home runs.
Wright posted a perfect 3-0 record and fanned 26 batters with two complete games and one strikeout over 20.1 innings of work.
The Huntington native posted a career-high 13 strikeouts against UTSA on March 24 and struck out nine while shutting out Kansas in the opener on March 27. Wright won five straight decisions dating back to March 6 with an overall record of 10-4 with a 2.21 earned run average, nine complete games, four shutouts and 95 strikeouts.
Texas (23-9, 3-0 Big 12) also returned to the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association rankings, coming in at No. 25 this week. Oregon, which defeated the Longhorns 9-0 on Feb. 6, was the top ranked team. Full rankings can be found here. Kansas dropped to No. 26.
The Longhorns will play Houston Wednesday in Houston and will play a home-and-home series with Texas State beginning Friday in San Marcos and ending Saturday at McCombs Field.
