Texas coach Shaka Smart has filled out his coaching staff just one day before basketball coaches can hit the road recruiting again.
Smart has hired former Virginia Commonwealth assistant David Cason, who logged three years as an assistant at Vanderbilt before joining Smart’s VCU staff last season.
Cason and Mike Morrell were both on the VCU staff under Smart. The third assistant, Darrin Horn, was a head coach at South Carolina and compiled a 60-63 record in four seasons. He left the Gamecocks after the 2011-12 season and has recently been working for ESPN’s SEC Network.
Texas officials have not announced any of the hirings, although all three coaches now appear in the official UT online directory. None of the personnel files have been completed, though. Smart himself is listed as “volunteer intern” with men’s basketball at the moment.
