Texas falls to Texas Tech, drops key Big 12 series

Posted May 3rd, 2015

Texas Tech 5, Texas 1

Why Texas (24-24, 9-12) lost: Horns had a base-runner on in all but the first inning but had little to show for it. In the sixth, Zane Gurwitz grounded out softly with bases loaded. Texas loaded them again in the eighth but Brooks Marlow and Ben Johnson each struck out. Johnson was ejected after arguing a called third strike that appeared to come in low. The only run of the day came on Bret Boswell’s bases-loaded walk in the eighth.

Why Texas Tech (29-20, 12-9) won: Tech won the series in large part because of RHP Dominic Moreno, who pitched six scoreless innings and struck out six. Moreno, making his second start of the season, threw seven shutout innings at Texas in 2013.

Key stat: Texas left 13 runners on base.

On deck: Texas State, 6 p.m. Tuesday, 1300, LHN.
