McGee-Stafford refers to herself as a suicide survivor who has dealt with traumatic adversities through her life. She has shared her story through slam poetry and was recently featured on ESPN.

“Being a student-athlete at Texas has given me a great platform to help and impact people’s lives,” McGee-Stafford said upon receiving notice of the award. “Since telling my story in-depth, I have received an outpouring of support from a number of different walks of life. They have embraced me to offer support and, most importantly, share their own stories.”

The Los Angeles native was an All-Big 12 first-team pick. In six post-season games she averaged team-bests of 14.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, and a .636 field goal percentage.
