On Thursday, embattled Longhorns baseball coach Augie Garrido insisted his program is in good shape despite heading into the final weekend of the regular season at .500 overall.
Garrido was asked if he’s proud that earlier in the day Texas tied for most academic all-conference selections in the Big 12. His response drifted into an endorsement of the team’s recent recruiting.
“The only thing wrong is our record,” he said. “The won-loss record’s what’s wrong. Everything else about the program is in good shape. It really is. The recruiting class that’s coming in matches up with [the freshman class]. It’ll be the first class recruited completely by this coaching staff. We have two really good recruiting classes coming in in ’16 and ’17. We have a great graduation rate, doing well in the classroom, doing what’s right off the field. The program’s under control. We just lost more games than we should have.”
Texas (24-24, 9-12) plays at Baylor on Saturday before wrapping up the series with a double-header on Sunday.
