TULSA — Texas left fielder Ben Johnson was named first-team Big 12 on Tuesday, while pitcher Parker French and catcher/first baseman Tres Barrera were second-team.

The fifth-seed Longhorns open the conference tournament against Texas Tech at 9 a.m. Wednesday at ONEOK Field. French will get the start for Texas, which must win the league tournament to earn a berth to the NCAA regional.

Johnson (Westwood High) was an obvious choice as he ranks in the top five in the league in multi-hit games (25, second), total bases (116, third), slugging (.540, fourth), and hits (76, tied for fourth). His seven triples leads the Big 12.

French (3-3) is eighth in the Big 12 in ERA (2.40). In 11 of 13 starts, he has allowed two earned runs or less.

Barrera is hitting .295 with eight home runs, which is tied for third in the conference.

Also, three Longhorns made the All-Big 12 freshman team: Cantu, RHP Connor Mayes, and third baseman Bret Boswell.

Big 12 champion TCU was well represented, collecting honors for player of the year (Cody Jones), coach of the year (Jim Schlossnagle, unanimous) and freshman of the year (Connor Wanhanen).

Oklahoma State LHP Michael Freeman is the pitcher of the year, while Kansas’ Ben Krauth is the newcomer of the Year.
