Texas tops Texas Tech 2-1 in Big 12 tournament opener

Posted May 20th, 2015

Texas 2, Texas Tech 1

Why Texas (27-25) won: RHP Parker French went all nine innings and continued his career-long dominance of Tech. The lone run French allowed in the seventh snapped his scoreless innings streak against the Red Raiders at 20. On May 1, French went 7 2/3 innings against Tech in a 3-0 win.

Why Texas Tech (30-23) lost: Second baseman Bryant Burleson’s throwing error in the seventh allowed Texas’ Zane Gurwitz to score from second, making it 2-0.

Key stat: Texas started one left-handed hitter against LHP Cameron Smith. And that player, Collin Shaw, had the biggest hit of the day — a two-out triple in the second. He scored on Gurwitz’s double on the next pitch.

On deck: vs Baylor, 4 p.m. Thursday, 1300, Fox College Sports.
