Texas falls to Oregon State in regional baseball opener
Posted May 29th, 2015
Oregon State 5, Texas 4
Why Texas (30-26) lost: After the Longhorns’ Brooks Marlow homered in the eighth to tie the game at 4-4, the Texas bullpen ran into trouble. Rather than stick with Connor Mayes, who got out of the seventh, the Horns turned to Kirby Bellow who walked leadoff hitter Joe Gillette. Gillette scored two batters later on Kyle Nobach’s RBI double against Jake McKenzie.
Why Oregon State (39-16-1) won: The Beavers had three straight singles in both the fourth and the fifth innings. The net result was three runs that pushed the lead to 3-1.
Key stat: The teams combined for 20 singles to start the game before Nobach’s eighth-inning double..
On deck: vs Dallas Baptist/VCU, 11 a.m. Saturday, 1300, LHN.
