Texas baseball’s struggles at the plate during the 2015 season have continued this summer.
Four of the six Longhorn position players participating in a summer league are hitting .200 or below. They are: Tres Barrera (.111, 36 at bats), Zane Gurwitz (.143, 42 ab), Travis Jones (.146, 41 ab) and Bret Boswell (.200, 25 ab).
Barrera (Orleans/Cape Cod League), Gurwitz (Anchorage Bucs/Alaska Baseball) and Boswell (Santa Barbara Foresters/California Collegiate) were starters for Texas. Jones (Victoria Generals/Texas Collegiate) started a game at first base in the Big 12 tournament.
Swinging the hottest sticks are Patrick Mathis (.306, 36 ab) and Kaleb Denny (.226, 53 ab). Denny is playing for the Santa Barbara Foresters, and Mathis for the Gaithersburg Giants of the Cal Ripken League.
Two Texas pitchers are playing this summer.
Jon Malmin has a 6.54 ERA in 11 innings with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters of the Northwoods League. Parker Joe Robinson has a 1.88 ERA in 14 1/3 innings with the Santa Barbara Foresters.
