Texas junior middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu has been named preseason player of the year in the Big 12, sharing the honor with Oklahoma’s Kierra Holst.
Holst and Ogbogu were high school teammates at Coppell and led their team to the 5A state title in 2011.
Ogbogu is Texas’ seventh straight Big 12 preseason player of the year and its 10th overall. She played a starring role last season as the Longhorns won their fourth straight conference title.
Also for Texas, outside hitter Micaya White was named freshman of the year. White, of Frisco Centennial, was the nation’s fourth-ranked recruit, according to Prep Volleyball.
Joining Ogbogu on the all-conference team for Texas are senior middle blocker Molly McCage and outside hitter Ebony Nwanebu. Nwanebu has transferred to Texas after playing two seasons at USC.
The Longhorns, who advanced to the NCAA Final Four last year, open the season Aug. 28 at home against Rice at the American Campus Classic. The Longhorns will play UC Irvine and LSU the following day.
