The Fighting Irish return up to 17 of 22 possible starters from last year’s 8-5 team. That amount of returning starts is one of the main reasons why some pollsters have Notre Dame in the Top 10 nationally.
According to the South Bend Tribune, though, the team does have youth dotted on on its depth chart, including a true freshman at place-kicker. Redshirt freshman Tyler Newsome mans the punting duties while another redshirt freshman C.J. Sanders is slotted as the first-team punt returner.
