Lashann Higgs, ranked last season as the No. 4 overall recruit in the country by ESPN, has been named preseason All-Big 12 Freshman of the Year by league coaches.
Higgs finished her prep career as a consensus All-American at Cedar Ridge High School in Round Rock. She was named a high school Naismith Trophy finalist as a senior when she averaged 27 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists in leading her team to a 30-3 record.
The Big 12 Conference has announced its Preseason All-Big 12 Team as well as honors for preseason player, newcomer and freshman of the year for the 2015-16 women’s basketball season. The awards are chosen by head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
Nina Davis (Baylor) was named Preseason Player of the Year while her teammate Alexis Jones (Baylor) was honored as Preseason Newcomer of the Year.
Joining Davis on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team are Niya Johnson (Baylor), Gabbi Ortiz (Oklahoma), Brittney Martin (Oklahoma State), Zahna Medley (TCU) and Bria Holmes (West Virginia). Six players were honored due to a tie in the voting. Davis was last season’s Big 12 Player of the Year while Ortiz garnered Freshman of the Year honors. Davis, Johnson, Martin, Medley and Holmes were members of the 2014-15 All-Big 12 First Team.
Three Texas players were named to the honorable mention squad: Imani Boyette, Kelsey Lang and Ariel Atkins.
