2017 commit Sam Ehlinger named AP’s player of the year

On the heels of being named Texas’ 6A offensive player of the year, 2017 commit quarterback Sam Ehlinger was tabbed as the state’s top football player.

State honors are tied to high school players’ regular-season achievements. Ehlinger threw for 2,436 yards for a Westlake team that finished 9-1 in qualifying for the Class 6A, Division I playoffs from District 14-6A. He rushed for 748 yards and ran or passed for 48 touchdowns to pace an offense that averaged 44.2 points per game.
He beat out a 10-player field featuring Mansfield Lake Ridge quarterback Jett Duffey, Canadian quarterback Tanner Schafer and Cameron Yoe running back Traion Smith for the all-classification award.
