One more week, one more preseason accolade for Texas’ leader on defense.
Malik Jefferson was added to the preseason Butkus Award Tuesday morning to add to his previous inclusion on the Bednarik award preseason and Bronco Nagurski award watch lists. He was also named a pre-season All-American by the Sporting News.
Jefferson finished last year with 61 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. He was named to freshman All-American teams by Football Writers of Association of America and ESPN at the end of the 2015 season.
If Jefferson wins the coveted award, given to the nation’s top linebacker, it would be his second one to add to his collection. He won the high school version of the award in 2014 at Mesquite Poteet High School.
The Longhorns have had one winner of the award in the past – Derrick Johnson was honored in 2004. Sergio Kindle was a finalist in 2009.
