Longhorn Gavin Hall tied for second after first round of U.S. Amateur

UT’s Gavin Hall shot a 5-under 65 in the first round of the U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan on Monday and is tied for second place.

Hall is in a three-way tie for second and trails leader Dawson Armstrong by one stroke. Armstrong had seven birdies and one bogey to finish with a 64. Hall had a bogey-free round and rolled in five birdies.

Teammates Taylor Funk, Scottie Scheffler and Doug Ghim carded rounds under par in the opening round. Funk shot a 66 on the North Course and is tied for fifth at 4 under. Scheffler had five birdies and a bogey on the back nine of the South Course and carded a 3 under 67 to tie for 11th. Ghim was 1 under par on the South course and is tied for 31st place.


The top 64 finishers after 36 holes will advance to match play. The match play finals will take place on Sunday.
