At least one school is no longer a candidate to join the Big 12.
East Carolina, which probably was one of the longest of long shots to gain an invitation to join the Big 12 in this latest round of expansion, released a statement Wednesday that it was no longer in the running. Not that anyone gave ECU much of a chance.

The school’s chancellor, Dr. Cecil Station, said he was notified of the news by Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby and issued a statement, saying, “I was proud of the support Pirate Nation provided to our efforts. While I am disappointed by the decision, I remain undaunted in my commitment to ECU athletics and the excellence displayed by our wonderful athletes, coaches and staff.”
“As you know, we have never commented on who was or was not involved, ” Bowlsby told the American-Statesman Wednesday in regards to the decision, “We are not going to start now.”
