No. 19 California edges Texas soccer team 1-0

Posted September 4th, 2016

The 19th-ranked Cal Golden Bears won their fourth straight match with a 1-0 shutout of Texas Sunday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

California (5-1) took the lead on a deceiving free kick in the 68th minute.

After a Texas foul, Cal got a free kick outside the top of the penalty box and while both sides where setting up for the kick, Kelly Fitzgerald made a quick pass to Ifeoma Onumonu, who beat Texas goalie Paige Brown from nine yards out.

Despite the loss, Texas head coach Angela Kelly was proud of the progress of her young team.

“I’m really proud of our squad. We just competed against one of the best teams in this country, and if that’s one of the best teams in the country, I’m really excited about where we are this early in the season.” said Kelly.

Brown, a senior transfer from Louisville, made her second start of the season and had six saves as the Golden Bears out-shot Texas (3-2-0) 15-10 and held a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Brown felt the Texas defense performed well against a California offense that scored four goals against 15th-ranked Texas Tech on Friday.

“The defense played good. I felt connected with them throughout the game, and they were tackling hard, stepping in when they need to.” said Brown.

Cal goalie Emily Boyd had two saves and earned her 20th career shutout, moving into a tie for fourth place on Cal’s all-time shutout list.
