Collin Markes, Rodrigo Banzer advance to round of 16 at Racquet Club Collegiate

The Texas men’s tennis team opened its fall season with eight singles victories and two doubles wins Friday while competing at the Porsche Napa Valley Tennis Classic in Napa, California and the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland.

Longhorns Colin Markes and Rodrigo Banzer advanced to the singles round of 16 at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational and Texas freshmen Yuya Ito and Christian Sigsgaard notched their first collegiate victories at the Napa Valley event.

Markes, a Westwood High School grad, defeated Jorge Martinez of Tyler Junior College 6-2, 6-4 and bested Rice’s Jake Hansen in three-sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the round of 32. Markes will face Denver’s Yannick James in the round of 16.


Banzer dispatched Arizona’s Oliver Plaskett in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 and will play Tyler Junior College’s Ferran Calvo in the next round.

Ito defeated St. Mary’s Calvin Jordaan 6-0, 6-2 and Sigsgaard beat Francois Kellerman of Tulsa 7-5, 6-2.
