Texas’ Colin Markes advanced to semifinals of the men’s singles draw at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational with a pair of straight set victories Saturday in Midland.
Markes defeated Denver’s Yannick James 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16 and topped Utah State’s Kai Wehnelt 6-4, 7-6 in the quarterfinals. Markes, a Westwood High graduate, will play Ollie Thestrup of Auburn in the semis on Sunday. UT’s Rodrigo Banzer fell in the round of 16 to Tyler Junior College’s Ferran Calvo 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
The Longhorns were also competing at the Porsche Napa Valley Tennis Classic in Napa, California. Texas freshman Christian Sigsgaard defeated North Carolina’s Arturo Schmidt 6-1, 6-4 as Texas went 1-2 in singles play.
