No. 1 Texas golf slips to ninth place at Fighting Illini Invite

The Texas men’s golf team dropped to ninth place at the Fighting Illini Invite after shooting a 12-over 292 in the second round Saturday at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois.

Illinois holds a 21 stroke lead over Texas A&M heading into the final round. The Fighting Illini shot even par in the second round and top the team leaderboard at 6 under par. Illinois’ Dylan Meyer is tied for first with Texas A&M’s Cameron Champ at 4 under par. Champ followed an opening round 65 with a 71 and Meyer shot his second straight sub-par round. Meyer had four birdies on the back nine to finish with a 4-under 67.

Texas junior Doug Ghim is tied for sixth place at even par after carding a 1-under 69. Texas’ Gavin Hall  moved up to a tie for 14th place at 3 over par with a 2-under 68. Hall had five birdies, a double bogey and a bogey on the front nine and shot even par on the back nine.


UT’s Taylor Funk shot 6 over in the second round and Steven Chervony carded a 9-over 79.
