UT’s Colin Markes captures singles title at Racquet Club Collegiate

Texas sophomore Colin Markes claimed the singles title at at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational with a three-set victory over Tyler Junior College’s Ferran Calvo 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday in Midland.
Markes, a Westwood High School graduate, won five matches over the weekend and gave Texas its second straight singles title at the event. Texas sophomore Harrison Scott won it last season.
Markes moved on to the final after defeating Auburn’s Ollie Thornton in the semifinals 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. He dropped the first set against Calvo 4-6 and responded with a 6-4 win in the second set. Markes held off Calvo 6-4 in the final set to earn his first collegiate title.
