Posted October 17th, 2016

The 20th-ranked Texas women’s golf team is in third place after shooting 8 over par through the first two rounds of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational on Monday at UT Golf Club.

The Longhorns carded an even-par 288 in the opening round and followed with a 296. No. 12 Miami is in the lead thanks to a record-setting performance by sophomore Dewi Weber.

Weber broke the tournament’s scoring record with a 64 in the first round and followed with a 65 to take the lead at 15 under. Former Baylor Bear Hayley Davis set the previous record with a 65 in 2014.

Weber, who finished tied for second at last season’s NCAA Championship, had 10 birdies in the opening round, including six straight from holes 11 through 16. She had a bogey-free round with seven birdies in the second round and holds a 10 stroke lead over Kent State’s Michaela Finn. The Hurricanes are in first place at 6 under and are eight strokes ahead of 13th-ranked Kent State.

The Longhorns have four players in the top nine heading into Tuesday’s final round.

UT’s Haley Mills shot a 1-under 71 in the first round, carded a 2-over 74 in the second round and is tied for eighth place at 1 over.

UT’s Sophia Schubert, Great Volker and Julia Beck are tied for ninth place at 2 over. Schubert, Volker and Beck shot even par 72s  in the opening round and carded 74s in the afternoon.
