Story highlights
Karen Aston’s momentum for signing top basketball recruits continued Wednesday with the signing of Galena Park North Shore’s Chasity Patterson, ranked by one recruiting site as the nation’s No. 1 point guard.
As a junior last year, Patterson averaged 24.5 points, 5.6 assists and 4.4 assists for a team that went 29-1 and made it to the Class 6A state championship game. She shot 49 percent from the floor, 39 percent on 3-pointers and 84 percent from the free throw line.
ESPN ranks Patterson (No. 23 above) as the No. 4 overall prospect in the country.
Patterson chose Texas after considering UCLA, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Kentucky and Texas A&M.
She enters her senior season with more than 2,200 points in her prep career and has helped lead her team to a 96-12 (.889) record over the past three years.
“I am incredibly proud to bring Chasity to the Forty Acres and our program,” Aston said. “She is not only a terrific basketball player, but more importantly a phenomenal young lady. Chaz brings a wealth of understanding of what it takes to win, coming from such quality high school and club programs.”
Texas is expected to sign one or more player either late Wednesday or early Thursday.
Among the players who remain unsigned is the nation’s No. 1 recruit, Megan Walker, a 6-1 forward from Chesterfield, Va. Walker reportedly has narrowed her choices to UConn and Texas.
