Junior Texas point guard Brooke McCarty is among 50 players who have been named to the preseason watch list for the 2017 Naismith Women’s College Player of the Year award, it was announced Wednesday by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
A three-year starter, McCarty averages a team-high 16.3 points per game and 3.8 assists. Playing a team-high 29.8 minutes per game, McCarty has scored in double figures in each of her team’s four games, including a season-high 20 at Stanford in the season opener. She is shooting 51 percent from the floor and 45 percent from beyond the arc. McCarty is two three-pointers away from moving into the school’s all-time top-10 list for career three-pointers made.
McCarty, a League City, Texas, native, was a preseason All-Big 12 Conference selection and is one of 20 point guards nationally who have been named to the preseason watch list for the 2017 Nancy Lieberman Award.

McCarty and the No. 14 Longhorns return to action on Thursday when they play host to No. 3 South Carolina as part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. Tip-off at the Erwin Center is 6 p.m. and will be televised by ESPN2.
