Texas extends an offer to Lake Travis tight end

Posted December 4th, 2016

One day, might Westlake quarterback Sam Ehlinger be throwing passes to a high school rival?

Lake Travis tight end Cade Brewer has picked up a scholarship offer from Texas. The Longhorns currently have seven verbal commitments in their 2017 recruiting class, one of which is Ehlinger.

New Texas football coach Tom Herman was among those in attendance for Lake Travis’ 51-3 win over Westlake in the Class 6A, Division I quarterfinals this past Friday. Brewer had six catches and a touchdown in Lake Travis’ 10th straight win over its nearby rival. Ehlinger was sidelined by a wrist injury.

According to 247Sports, the 6-foot-3, 223-pound Brewer holds scholarship offers from Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Kansas State. Since April, though, the three-star prospect has been committed to a SMU program that is led by former Lake Travis coach Chad Morris. Lake Travis quarterback Charlie Brewer, who is not related to Cade, has also pledged to the Mustangs.

Brewer has appeared in 11 games this season for a Lake Travis team that will meet Humble Atascocita in the state semifinals. One year after he recorded 14 touchdown catches, Brewer has turned 53 receptions into 737 yards and 10 touchdowns. One of those catches was a one-handed snag at Westlake’s expense.
