Fast take: Texas beats Texas Tech 67-47

This marked the 7th straight Texas victory over Tech, spanning three seasons.

The Big 12 opener goes to Texas.

Brooke McCarty scored 14 of her team-high 16 points in the second half to help the Longhorns defeat Texas Tech 67-47 Thursday night at the Erwin Center.

Brianna Taylor and Joyner Holmes scored 10 points apiece as the Longhorns won their fifth straight game.


Texas improved its record to 7-4, 1-0 in the Big 12. Texas Tech is 8-4, 0-1.

This marked the season-low in points for the Lady Raiders. Their previous low came during a 74-56 loss to Miami on Nov. 27.

As for Texas, the Longhorns have won the rebounding battle in all 11 of their games. They won the battle of the boards Thursday 49-28.

This marked the seventh straight victory for Texas over the Lady Raiders. The Longhorns swept the series the last three years.

Texas will continue its Big 12 schedule with a couple of road games — Iowa State at noon Sunday and Kansas at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Longhorns return to the Erwin Center to play TCU on January 7.

Holmes was the dominant player of the first half, scoring 10 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field. Texas Tech stayed competitive behind guard Reece’ Caldwell, who scored 11 of the team’s 17 points.

The nation’s No. 8 player in three-point shots made per game (3.5), she made 3 of her 5 attempts behind the arc in the first half. Caldwell led all scorers with 24 points.

Tech, though, scored just 5 points in the second quarter, just one point more than the team’s record-low of 4 set last season.

Texas led 30-17 at the break.
