The No. 10 Longhorns upset the seventh-ranked Florida Gators 4-2 at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va., on Friday.
The win set up a match with No. 2 Wake Forest in the quarterfinals Saturday.
“To beat a team like Florida feels great. We weren’t quite sure where we stood,” Texas coach Michael Center said. “We got into the match and fought really hard to come out on top. It was a great effort.”
Texas took the doubles point before winning two singles matches to take a 3-1 lead. Rodrigo Banzer defeated Jordan Belga 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) to seal the match for the Longhorns.
Christian Sigsgaard and Julian Zlobinsky defeated Elliott Orkin and Belga 6-1 to take a doubles win before Harrison Scott and Yuya Ito sealed the doubles point. Scott and Ito defeated Maxx Lipman and Josh Wardell 6-2 after Florida tied the doubles competition.
Scott opened singles competition with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Orkin to give the Longhorns a 2-0 lead.
Leonardo Telles made it 3-0 with his 6-3, 6-3 win over McClain Kessler.
After Florida made it 3-1 at first singles, Banzer took his win to close out the match.
“We got to three points quickly but it was really tough to find that fourth point,” Center said. “I was really impressed by Rodrigo Banzer and his mental toughness and the way he came back from 5-2 down in the third set.”
