Texas men’s tennis team falls short at ITA National Team Indoor

Posted February 18th, 2017

After upsetting Florida on Friday, the Longhorns came up just short Saturday against No. 2 Wake Forest, falling 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Charlottesville, Va.

Yuya Ito, Harrison Scott and Leonardo Telles each notched singles victories after the Longhorns fell down 3-0, but Alan Gadjlev defeated Rodrigo Banzer 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4 to seal the win for Wake Forest.

“It came down to the last match, the last set, and it was a great team effort by the guys,” coach Michael Center said. “Everyone really fought hard and competed really well. The bounce of the ball just didn’t go our way today.”

Christian Sisgaard and Julian Zlobinsky opened doubles action with a 6-3 win, but the Demon Deacons took the next two contests to seal the doubles point.

Sigsgaard fell in three sets to No. 1 Petros Chrysochos to make it 2-0 for Wake Forest.

Ito needed two tiebreakers, but upset No. 26 Christian Seraphim in two sets.

Scott was able to make it 3-2 after his comeback, three-set win over Borna Gojo.

Telles gave the Longhorns their last victory of the day with a three-set win over Dennis Uspensky.

“We’re disappointed we lost, but we’re excited we get to play again tomorrow,” Center said. “Our guys are growing and developing, and the best is yet to come.”

Texas will face 11th-seeded Oklahoma State in a consolation match Sunday at 8 a.m.
