Baylor’s hex over Texas — and the Big 12 Conference — continues.
The fourth-ranked Lady Bears erased an 11-point deficit with a strong fourth quarter to defeat No. 6 Texas 70-67 Monday night at the Erwin Center.
The victory gives Baylor the inside track for the Big 12 regular-season championship with only two games to play.
Baylor won the game because Texas had no answer for BU center Kalani Brown. The 6-7 sophomore scored 35 points and hauled in 13 rebounds.
Texas, though, had a chance to tie the game, but a three-point attempt by Brooke McCarty at the buzzer rimmed out.
Texas is 21-6, 14-2 in the Big 12. Baylor is 26-2, 15-1.
McCarty led Texas with 16 points. Ariel Atkins had 14.
Texas led at halftime 36-25. Joyner Holmes and Atkins scored 7 points apiece in the half, but the game was dominated early by UT’s defense. Baylor made just 7 of its 27 shots from the field.
Baylor also had 12 turnovers in the half. To make matters worse, All-America candidate Alexis Jones hurt her knee in the first half and did not score in the half.
Texas center Kelsey Lang was inadvertently hit in the head in the second quarter and left the game in the third quarter for a possible concussion.
Texas, which had lost 14 straight to Baylor heading into the season, defeated BU 85-79 two weeks ago in Waco.
Texas will conclude its regular-season schedule Friday night against Iowa State. The Longhorns will honor their two seniors, Brooke McCarty and Lang.
The final game of the regular season will be next Monday at Kansas State.
