A day after Texas coach Tom Herman was non-committal on who his 2017 starting quarterback will be, sophomore quarterback Shane Buechele was named as one of 30 quarterbacks on the 2017 Davey O’Brien Award watch list, given annually to the best quarterback.

Buechele broke a handful of freshman quarterback records previously owned by Colt McCoy in 2016. The Arlington native started every game and battled through injuries to finish with 2,958 passing yards with 21 touchdowns.
Already on the Maxwell Award watch list, Buechele would join Earl Campbell, Vince Young and Colt McCoy of winners of the award. Campbell, the 1977 Heisman Trophy winner and legendary running back won the award when it was given to the best player in the Southwest. Young won in 2005 and McCoy in 2009.
The watch list comes a day after Herman said Buechele and freshman quarterback Sam Ehlinger were the top quarterbacks on his depth chart, but didn’t name a starting quarterback for the opener against Maryland in September.
However, Herman also added that he likes some of the things he’s seen from Buechele since becoming the head coach last November: ” Shane has done a marvelous job of coming in this summer and really trying to be more of a leader.”
