Texas coach Tom Herman declined to comment Thursday about what he did or didn’t know about former Ohio State receivers coach Zach Smith from his time with the Buckeyes.
Herman was Ohio State’s offensive coordinator from 2012-2014 before leaving to become the head coach at Houston prior to the 2015 season. Smith was the wide receivers coach at OSU from 2012-2018. He was fired in July.
Police reports indicate that authorities were called to Smith’s home twice in a two-week span in late 2015. However, Courtney Smith, Zach’s ex-wife, said she shared photos with Ohio State assistant coaches’ wives that depict injuries suffered in 2014 and 2015 in an interview with college football reporter Brett McMurphy.
“As you guys should know, I left the program after the 2014 season, and the things that occurred to my knowledge happened in late 2015,” Herman said at a press conference. “So I really don’t think it would be fair or appropriate to be honest with you to comment about a situation at another program that happened while I wasn’t there.”
Asked if Herman or his family knew of any incidents of domestic violence by Zach Smith, the Texas coach said, “Again, it’s always been my policy to not comment on another program. We’re at Texas. We’ve been at Texas for a year and a half. As sensitive of a subject as this is, to comment in a forum like this I feel would be very inappropriate.”
Texas running backs coach Stan Drayton was at Ohio State from 2011-2014 and UT offensive coordinator Tim Beck was in Columbus from 2015-16. Asked if they knew anything, Herman again declined to comment. “That’s at another program that I’m not going to comment on,” Herman said.
Herman does have specific language in his Texas contract that requires him to report any known incidents of Title IX violations or domestic assault. However, UT policy requires him to report any known behavior.
Ohio State has placed head coach Urban Meyer on administrative leave while school officials examine the situation.
“We understand the power of the roles that we have,” Herman said. “The great thing about working at a great place like the University of Texas, we are trained extensively.”
