The eighth-ranked Texas men’s tennis team rolled to a 6-1 victory over SMU in the Longhorns’ home opener Sunday.
It was UT’s 18th win in a row over the Mustangs.
The doubles pairs of Yuya Ito-Chih Chi Huang and Colin Markes-Leonardo Telles got Texas (2-0) started on the right foot. Ito and Huang beat Michael Smith and Andrew Buhelos 6-1, and Markes and Telles topped Avery Pennywell and Tomas Vaise by the same score, securing the doubles point for the Longhorns. That meant the third match was stopped in a 3-3 tie.
UT’s Rodrigo Banzer won 10 consecutive games in a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Huntley Allen for the first singles point. Ito took the first nine games of his match and beat Roberto Rosales 6-0, 6-2. Texas’ Harrison Scott downed Jan-Simon Vrbsky 6-4, 6-4, Telles topped Tomas Vaise 6-4, 6-2, and Huang beat Gardiner Perotti 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (5).
SMU’s only bright spot was Carlos Sarrio’s 6-4, 6-0 win over Christian Sigsgaard.
Next up for the Longhorns will be the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event starting Friday at the Texas Tennis Center. The tournament will feature Washington, Miami and Utah State.
